Salzburg is a federal state of Austria, situated in the mountainous terrain of the Alps. The region shares international borders with Germany's Bavaria and Italy's Trentino-South Tyrol, alongside domestic borders with the Austrian states of Tyrol, Styria, Upper Austria, and Carinthia.
The city of Salzburg holds far more of the region's housing stock than anywhere else, and homes here are significantly more expensive than the regional average. By contrast, smaller towns like Hallein, Bad Gastein, and Straßwalchen offer much cheaper housing, sitting well below the average regional cost. Zell am See and Mattsee represent mid-sized markets, though Mattsee remains a pricier option than most of the smaller municipalities. Overall, buying a home in the Salzburg region is expensive, costing about half as much again as the average for Austria as a whole.
