Lagos is a coastal municipality in the Faro region of southern Portugal. Situated along the Atlantic coastline of the Algarve, the city is built around its historic port and maritime heritage, which historically drove the local economy. Today, Lagos is a major tourism and residential hub in southern Portugal, known for its dramatic cliffs, beaches, and historic harbor.
The local housing market is expensive, with property prices more than double the national average for Portugal. Most of the housing stock is concentrated in São Gonçalo de Lagos, which contains the vast majority of the homes in the municipality at prices slightly below the city average. The coastal parish of Luz holds nearly all the remaining housing, commanding higher prices. In contrast, the inland areas of Odiáxere and Freguesia de Bensafrim contain very little of the local housing. Odiáxere is the most expensive district in the municipality, while Freguesia de Bensafrim is the cheapest.
