Almada is a coastal city in the Setúbal region of Portugal, situated on the southern bank of the Tagus River estuary opposite Lisbon. The municipality sits on a hilly peninsula, rising to an elevation of about 58 metres. As a major urban centre, its local economy and institutional presence are anchored by its maritime position and key facilities, including the Portuguese Naval School.
The city is more expensive to buy property in than the Portuguese average, though prices vary significantly between its districts. Most of the housing is concentrated in Charneca de Caparica e Sobreda, which is by far the most expensive area to live. In contrast, the central district of Almada, Cova da Piedade, Pragal e Cacilhas and the neighbouring Laranjeiro e Feijó hold a similar share of the housing stock but are much cheaper, with prices falling well below the city average. The coastal strip of Costa da Caparica sits between these extremes, while Caparica e Trafaria holds the smallest share of the local market.
