Description

Energy-efficient living in the center of Thorn in one of the oldest historical streets in a culturally historical building dating from the 1930s. The design is by architect V. Tonnaer, who is known as a follower of functionalism. Characteristic of the architecture within functionalism were glass, steel, reinforced concrete, flat roofs, and overhanging horizontal surfaces. This resulted in a businesslike, straight-line architecture. Since 2009, the house has been completely renovated while preserving authentic elements and expanded with a spacious living kitchen with a cooking island. In 2019, the roof of the house was renewed with EPDM and slate, and 19 solar panels were installed. The frames will be painted in 2026. The house has an energy label A. On the first floor with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, you will find stained glass windows (with additional windows for insulation) and oak floors. The former garage has been converted into a studio and can also be used for various functions such as a home office. The large garden with a beautiful pergola runs all the way to the Akkerwal with its own backyard. There are also four parking spaces and a provision for a charging station.

THORN One of the jewels of Limburg is the white town of Thorn. The town is known for its distinctive white-painted houses, monumental buildings, and authentic cobblestone streets. The Abbey Church of Thorn towers high above the white houses. Here, time seems to have stood still. You will find picturesque white houses, centuries-old buildings, winding streets paved with Maas pebbles, and a beautiful church. The terraces in the Hoogstraat are bustling in the summer. On the other side of the Maas lies the fortified town of Stevensweert. The street pattern is impressive and the same goes for the intact historical core. Water sports enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy here. Thanks in part to its location near the A2 and the N273, Thorn benefits from good accessibility. In about a quarter of an hour, you can drive to Roermond or Weert. This makes Thorn a popular commuter town. The bus stop is just around the corner; a bus to Roermond and Weert departs every hour.

Thorn has a unique history that dates back to the end of the 10th century. Over time, a miniature principality developed under the leadership of an abbess and 20 noble convent ladies. The town had its own jurisdiction and minted its own coins. In 1794, this came to an end with the arrival of the French. It was then that Thorn got its characteristic white color. After the noble ladies fled, the French introduced a tax based on the size of the windows. The poor population, often living in large buildings that previously belonged to wealthy people, could not afford this. To limit the amount of the tax assessment, the windows were bricked up. In order to hide the traces of construction ("scars of poverty"), the houses were whitewashed.

MUNICIPALITY OF MAASGOUW

The municipality of Maasgouw was established on January 1, 2007, from the merger of the former municipalities of Heel, Maasbracht, and Thorn. The name Maasgouw is a combination of Maas and gouw. The Maas is the river that connects the three municipalities. Gouw means region. The municipality of Maasgouw has 23,779 inhabitants distributed over 10 cores. The cores include Beegden, Heel and Panheel, Linne, Maasbracht and Brachterbeek, Ohé and Laak, Stevensweert, Thorn and Wessem. The municipality of Maasgouw is a green and water-rich municipality. In this natural environment, there are plenty of hiking, cycling, and equestrian routes. For those who do not know this part of Limburg, it is a true discovery.
