Environmental information Nieuw-Buinen is a peat colony village with approximately 5,000 inhabitants. The village is located in the northern part of the municipality of Borger-Odoorn, in the province of Drenthe. The village originated from the busy peat extraction activities and the favorable conditions for industry and agriculture. The canal system was well suited for transporting products, such as peat. German merchants came to the area and shipped their glassware via the waterways. Housing developed along the Monden. In 1838, the first glass factory was founded: the beginning of the glass industry in Nieuw-Buinen, which in the nineteenth century was considered the most important industry in Drenthe. In 1967, the last glass factory closed. Agriculture is still important for the village. The soil was and is extremely suitable for potato cultivation.
Nieuw-Buinen is a village where significant investments have been made in recent years in both the physical and social infrastructure. The village has excellent amenities, such as schools, sports facilities, an open-air swimming pool, and an ice rink. For daily shopping, you can go to a supermarket (Aldi). For even more amenities, you can go to Stadskanaal, within a few minutes' drive from Nieuw-Buinen. There are also good bus connections to and from Stadskanaal, Borger, and Assen.
